I’m going to show you how to install a cut-to-measure bench top. You’ll need your drill and your driver, some wood glue, spirit level to make sure your benches are level, tape measure, bench connectors, and the spanner that goes with those, some clamps, scraper, screws, and maybe the mallet for some adjustment. I’ve had my bench tops delivered this morning, so now let’s get started. This bench top has a waterfall edge, so that’s the first panel I’ll put in. It’s going to go down this side. I’ve already taken the top drawer and the second drawer out because I’ll need to screw through the cabinet on the inside to hold that waterfall panel.I’ll just go and get the panel. I’m leaving this waterfall edge 40 ml proud of the cabinet, 20 ml we’ll take into account for the drawers fronts or doors and the other 20 ml is purely for aesthetics. Now, I’ve got my measurement I’ll just clamp it in place, then I’ll fix it in four different locations. First of all, I’ll pre-drill and then I’ll screw it in. Two points at the front and two points at the back. You’ll notice with this panel here there’s quite an overhang, that’s because we’re going to incorporate a breakfast bar in this bench top. I’ll just remove this clamp and Stewart’s going to give me a hand to bring the bench top in. Always get someone to give you a hand when doing bench tops, because they are heavy and difficult. You’ll notice on the bench tops, some holes have been cut out. This is to take the bench connectors. There’s corresponding holes on the other long length of the bench as well. First you put some glue on this edge and then you’ll put the bench connectors in, and I’ll just show you those now. They simply just slide in like that and into the corresponding groove on the other bench top and than get tightened with a spanner. And that’s all that is to it, you just keep tightening until they come together with a nice, firm joint. We won’t put the bench in it’s final place because we still need to put the short end on and that’ll require clamping from underneath with the bench connectors and it’s easier if we can move everything forward a little bit to do that.I’m just going to put a small amount of glue on this edge before I put the bench clamps underneath. Smooth it on with a scraper. We now have to access from underneath to put the bench connectors in. Don’t fully tighten the joiners at this stage because you still need to adjust the top. Once
you got the 2 pieces nice and flush together you can then tighten the joiners. Some people also call those connectors. When you’re happy with that join, you can now put the bench top back into place. We’ll make some final adjustments and then we’ll screw it to the cabinet from underneath. Then we just pre-drill and screw from the bottom of the cabinet in to the bench top in a few spaces. As there’s no top rail in the cabinets at the back, we need to use these small angle brackets in order to hold the bench top to the back panel. These can go in when the cabinets go in before the bench tops or you can put them in now once the bench tops in place, you’re choice. Try and get one angle bracket in each cabinet, connecting the bench top to the back panel.First of all, I’m going to pre-drill to put the angle bracket on and then screw it into place. And that’s how we install a cut-to-measure bench top. .
