The lightwave test set was designed to operate in a system with a microwave network analyzer.  Mist network analyzers consist of a microwave source, a reference receiver, and one or more measurement receivers.  The microwave source is applied to the HP 83420 RF INPUT.  The lightwave test set then provides a reference signal to the analyzer reference receiver.  If the analyzer used in the system is an HP 8510 or an HP 8720 option H80, the reference receiver is also used for phase lock of the system.
